Women In Coffee Discussion

March 28, 2019 @ 7:00 pm - 11:00 pm

Women’s month is far from over!

We’re having our 2nd #WomenInCoffee discussion and since it’s coffee competition season all over the world, let’s talk to the trophy-toting women in coffee. There’s been a lot of buzz about the participation of women in coffee competitions…or the lack thereof. Are the same issues present in the Philippine competition stage as well?

Brought to you by Commune and IWCA-Philippines- Women in Coffee.

Discussions with four notable women in the coffee scene about diversity and gender biases in coffee competitions

Jaycee Galera
Barista, Clean Beach
2018 Philippine National Brewers Cup Champion

Jaycee has always enjoyed drinking coffee but it was in 2015 that she entered the specialty coffee industry as a barista. She is curious, independent, and always up for new experiences— these qualities are reflected in her coffee journey. After her first 2 years as a barista in Manila, she grabbed the opportunity to work in La Union where she now hones her craft as a coffee professional all while living by the beach. She believes that coffee is the best channel to communicate with people as she has built amazing relationships because of it.

Yassie Lorenzo
Barista, The Curator Coffee & Cocktails
2018 Philippine Coffee in Good Spirits Champion

Yassie has been a barista for more than 4 years now. Aside from her love for food & beverages, she is obsessed with cats! She thinks she was a furry feline in her past life: she’s quite moody, addicted to eating fish, and other seafood, and she takes a lot of naps. She embodies the ethos of her workplace and family, The Curator Coffee & Cocktails, which is to add value to all that is.

Michelle Sy
Independent barista
2019 Philippine Cup Tasters Champion

Mich is a banker by day and home coffee brewer by night. She started brewing coffee with a French Press and stumbled into pour over coffee along the way. She mostly frequents cafes and chats with baristas during her free time. Her passion for coffee and tasting has led her to join the Cup Tasters competition this 2019.

Wynona Casten
Barista, El Union Coffee
2017 Philippine Aeropress Champion

For Wynona, it all started out as a summer job 6 years ago. She’s all about trying out things even though it scares her and she knew that the industry has so much to offer, with such extensive areas to explore. So she just kept searching until she found her current home as a barista in El Union Coffee.
